*a Japanese tradition of picnicking under cherry blossom trees

Under azure hours, my dream
belongs inside the clouds, flushed lightly
with a brush of sunny flesh
and white brightness—how foolish we were

to have found each other plucking petals
one by one and two by two
beneath a cherry blossom three years ago,
starting from opposing ends

picking when we should have
left the tree in transience, bumping another
as our hands had encountered
another at the same bough, reaching a twig

with the same flower we eyed to pick at, and
then I look your way, once again,
wondering where you’ve been going as age
has vexed and creased your face

like those branches cracking sky
above us. We still love eating during springs
when the Sakuras keep their hues
still, as each petal slowly falls five centimeters

per second, raining a snow we’ve never seen
since that first day, that first day
we noted we were dying together, finally dining
with rice wine, celebrating life—
